NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR

Following their successful Spring concert featuring traditional music from England and America, the Mid Wessex Singers bade farewell to their Musical Director, Bryan Anderson and his wife, Julia, who sang soprano with the choir. Bryan and Julia are returning to their native USA in August so that Bryan can continue his musical studies after his year as Senior Organ Scholar at Wells Cathedral.
Steph Taylor, Chair of Mid Wessex Singers, explained ‘We have benefited enormously from the skills and talent of the succession of Senior Organ Scholars from Wells Cathedral as our Musical Directors over the past four years. The choir has appointed a permanent Musical Director, Elaine Thorneycroft-Gibb, who we are very much looking forward to directing us from September.’
Elaine has been involved with music and singing for most of her life. She has a Joint Honours Degree in Music and Education, plus a Certificate of Education from Bristol University and her whole career has been in music education.
She has worked with a number of different choirs in various settings, including her local church choir as Organist and Choir Director, providing music for services, wedding and funerals, and performances of musicals such as “Joseph” and “Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo.”
Elaine became the Musical Director of “The J Singers,” from 2008 till 2014, working on building and improving the choir’s choral abilities. She worked with the North Curry Jubilee Singers from March 2013 to December 2015, and went on to work with the Tuesday Morning Choir at Bridgwater Arts Centre, a Community Choir, which she currently leads for fun and to learn new songs.
